Based on reviewing the concept of a nation, this essay examined the formation and decline of the history-biography novel. The history-biography novel was new narrative genre by the nation project in the period of enlightenment of Korea. For the purpose of changing the contingency and fictionality of the nation transmitted the West into the actual being, the history-biography navel named past men as modern heroes. Therefore the Korean nation imagined the national homogeneity by inventing modern heroes. But the concept of nation in the history-biography novel didn't implied resistance to imperialism. Shin, Chae-ho named Euljimundeok as imperialist or expansionist. He wanted to overcome the present and to be imperialism ultimately. This resulted in ignoring modern individual. This was the inner-textual cause that the history-biography novels declined
