현대시에 나타난 리듬의 변주

Abstract

Rhythms take form in terms of sentences, stanzas, and lines. In static systems, rhythms take regular forms, whereas in dynamic systems where there are variations in tone, rhythms change as well. This paper examines how rhythms are generated, changed, and developed, focusing on Variations of Love(Sa-rang-ui Byeon-ju-gog) by Soo-Young Kim as an example. Kim’s Variations of Love(Sa-rang-ui Byeon-ju-gog) has certain overtones generated through the repetition of the word “love(sa-rang)” and a drama of meaning weaved by changing unit rhythms for different areas of syntax. As the five areas of syntax develop, new rhythm units appear and disappear and these rhythms are in sync with the semantic development of this poem. The five areas of syntax are as follows: (A) an area of rhythm where there are dramas of “love(sa-rang)” and “desire(yok-mang)”; (B) that where positivity embraces all negativity; (C) that where the time and space of death are integrated with those of revolution (love in death = heralding the beginning of revolution); (D) that where love is expressed as the potential created by “peach stone and apricot stone(bog-sa-ssi-wa sal-gu-ssi),” and; (E) that which ushers in the day when love will burst into bloom or the day when the peach stone and apricot stone will “go berserk in love.(sa-rang-e mi-chyeo nal-ttwil nal)” The change of syntax is expressed as the change of rhythm, a deep structure that leads to the change of syntax. Therefore, examining rhythm variations is a way of interpreting the deep structure of a poem as well as a way of opening up new semantic horizons. It is hoped that the understanding of rhythm variations will provide us with a new tool for exploring modern poetry in depth.
