Abstract

In this paper, I established a new theoretical methodology to examine the rhythm of modern Korean poetry and investigated its uses by analyzing such poetic works as ‘Me, Natasha, and a white donkey’ written by Seok Paek, ‘it's an empty house in a plain’ by Jin-gyu Jeong, and ‘by the river Han thawing’ by Jeong-ju Seo. Avoiding the conventional methodology like the theory of foot(colon), I proposed three different dimensions of rhythmic qualities. First of all, regularly repeating phonemes which have similar values makes poetic rhythm. In other words, when it makes harmony with the semantic construction, sounds of voices can bring about poetic rhythm. This could be meaningful in that it approves the possibility of a rhyme of modern Korean poetry. Second, repeating knots can make poetic rhythm when they were jointed with syllables of the same quantity. This concept is more useful than the traditional foot(colon) concept, in that this kinds of rhythm can make diverse changes in a poem according to the impulse or the enunciation of a poetic subject. Third, repeating the same sentences makes poetic rhythm. Although a sentence can be distinguished in a syntaxtic field, its rhythm can only be generated when it related with elements of semantics. Not the syntaxtic repeating but the semantic changes which is brought by the repeating can generate poetic rhythm.
