Abstract

This article aims to investigate on the rhythm of Lee Sang's poetry. For this, I premise the poetic rhythm as a texture of language. So far, no definitive answer has been given to this theme. In my discussion, I shall first consider the rhythm of icon, then the rhythm of syntax, and finally the rhythm of thought in Lee Sang's poetry. This article has attempted to sketch out the rhythm of Lee Sang's poetry in three aspects. The icons in 「線에關한覺書 6」 and 「詩第五號」 represent visual rhythm as a swirl. 「詩第一號」 and 「詩第七號」 evince that a poetic meaning are corresponding to sound and form in both. 「詩第二號」 and 「詩第三號」 illustrate that a stream of thought is represented by a cumulative repeat of signifiant. Specially, 「얼굴」 shows us a closed-circuit which composed of oppositions, cause-and-effects, and reasons. The conclusion which can be drawn from this study are following. First, many of Lee Sang's poems reveal a unique rhythm in the inner layer unlike a disorder in the outer layer. This means that Lee Sang was conscious of the openness and closure of language in a sound layer. Second, the rhythm in Lee Sang's poetry is a place where a sound, meaning and form are unified. In this, we can see the value of the rhythm in Lee Sang's poetry. This article, therefore, provides a stepping stone for developing an account of studying on the rhythm in modern free verse and prose poetry.
