The importance of studying terminology as one of the instruments of professional activity is investigated in the article. Based on of the example of a group of medical terms we define their correspondence to terminological demand without synonyms. The reason of semantic phenomenon is revealed conditionality, as well as typology of equivalent units, of their availability by characteristics of terminological systems. The author defined that special units with similar meanings in studied systems of terms are represented by the following subtypes: variants of word formation, elliptic variants, abbreviation variants, syntactic variants and duplets. The phenomenon of equivalence in medical terminology has a widespread and stable character, reflects the top of the intensive development and depends on potentiality of gnosiological processes of a concrete field of human activity. This phenomenon is conditioned by the object of the investigation, its social significance, the quality of collective intellectual activity, the level of equipment of investigators. The presence of equal nominations is appropriate due to the choice of an adequate unit, that is comfortable to use in a definite sphere of professional communication. Families of equal units are the basis for the activity of specialists in the field of normalization of special units.
