Abstract

This article attempts to discuss the ambivalence that appears in ‘dirty longing’, which is the dominant meaning in the serial poetry of 「Dongducheon」. It interprets such ambivalence to be the placeness of Dongducheon as perceived by the poet and it argues that the otherness and homogeneity of Kim Myung In regarding half bloods act simultaneously based on the production of that meaning. To military camp town half bloods, Dongducheon Bosanri is their homeland and it is not their homeland as it is the land of their mothers but not the land of their fathers. Also, within the viewpoint of Kim Myung In regarding half bloods exists both otherness trapped within the frame of a homogenous nation and homogeneity that follows the orphan consciousness of the poet. For such reasons, the placeness of Dongducheon is experienced by the poet as ambivalence such as 'dirty longing' instead of as coherent sentiment. If the political and social significance of Dongducheon forms the depth of ambivalent attributes, the emotions of Kim Myung In regarding half bloods form the surface. Following this, Dongducheon is remembered and reproduced as a 'dirty yet nostalgic' place to the poet. Dongducheon Bosanri possesses political and social characteristics that are distinctly different from those of other areas of Korea with the existence of a US army base and half bloods. For these reasons, specific events that cannot occur in other areas inherently exist in Dongducheon. Events don't necessarily occur because of situations or people but rather, the various social positions of their locations become essential conditions. Locations are positions of experience that provide basic environments for human perception and awareness and the unique placeness of Dongducheon dominates the general significance of 'dirty longing' that is reflected by the world recognition of the poet. The serial poetry of 「Dongducheon」 by Kim Myung In includes introspection regarding people and the landscape of Dongducheon, which was destroyed as the US army base was stationed there and it includes the literary desires of the poet who wishes to restore neglected places and people. We currently live in a multi-cultural society and social perceptions regarding half bloods are improving. However, half bloods of military camp towns are subjects that exist outside of social interest, unable to belong within the category of 'half bloods of a multicultural society'. Half bloods of military camp towns are not simply discriminated by Korea's frame as a homogenous nation but also within patriarchal sexual ethics culture. It is hoped that through this study, serious thought can be given to perceptions of discrimination and the exclusion of military camp town half bloods among 'us' and that paths can be formed that search for methods to coexist with them as social outsiders that are no different from us.
