Abstract

Looking into Shin Gyeong-Rim’s poems, we can find the spots that he has visited are mostly poor regions such as old and inactive countryside and the Third World rather than central areas like cities or downtown areas. Shin Gyeong-Rim’s poetry are about people living in periphery areas and experiences in there, and the stories exhibit the potential resistance of periphery areas against central areas and the poet’s recognition of pursuit. Accordingly, this article figures out the locality of place reproduction shown in Shin Gyeong-Rim’s poetry and verifies the ground to maintain locality is the topophilia of local residents. In ‘the deconstructive viewpoint and the landscape of the village as text’, the poet sees the landscape as a sort of text written by the subject of producing power and reads it from a deconstructive perspective to capture the mechanism that central power operates on locals. It either destroys or marginalizes the cultural･ historical value of local areas that has been transmitted for a long time, and accordingly, the landscape of local areas has been exchanged with disparate landscape by central power. However, locals have maintained their own culture as leading a plain and carefree life that can be hardly found in central areas. This is ‘the ordinary value that the third space is equipped with’ and forms the ground where locality can be maintained ceaselessly. Most people think that a state’s identity may be weaker due to internalization, but the identity of the local, one of the subunits of a state, will never be deteriorated. In other words, as long as local residents keep having place-love, the identity of the place will be maintained despite external changes. This study on the locality of place reproduction shown in Shin Gyeong-Rim’s poetry highlights the local that has been discriminated relatively more as a new place and furthermore provides a solution to get rid of centralism that distorts the local as some kind of abnormality.
