Abstract
This study examines the usage of prefixal Sino-Korean elements as determiners or adverbs as instances of degrammaticalization. Several new cases of degrammaticalization among prefixal Sino-Korean morphemes have been identified, and their processes and developmental pathways toward adverbialization or determinativization are analyzed in more detail than in previous studies. In this paper, degrammaticalization is regarded as a broader concept encompassing lexicalization, referring not only to the transition from non-autonomous to autonomous forms, but also to the weakening of grammatical properties or the strengthening of lexical characteristics within dependent morphemes. Based on corpus data, this study first investigates how monosyllabic Sino-Korean elements, originally used as roots, extended their usage into prefixal forms from the perspective of grammaticalization, and subsequently explains their determinativization and adverbs as examples of degrammaticalization. Specifically, the study examines the adverbialization of modifying prefixes such as ‘jae(再), chwe(最), and dae(大)’; the determinativization of pye(廢) and hwal(活); and the determinativization of negative, predicative prefixes such as ‘ban(反) and bi(非)’. These changes in grammatical category illustrate a shift from grammatical to lexical elements and can be interpreted as involving both degrammaticalization and lexicalization. In particular, it is confirmed that the prefix ‘dae(大)’ underwent determinativization prior to its development into an adverb. That is, 대 first acquired wordhood through its use as a determiner, and then gradually expanded its scope of modification to be interpreted as an adverb. This phenomenon arises from the fact that modifying prefixal Sino-Korean elements more frequently co-occur with nouns than with verbs in syntactic constructions. Furthermore, compared to predicative prefixes like ‘ban(反)’ and ‘bi(非)’, which function only as determiners, modifying prefixes such as dae(大) tend to exhibit both determiner and adverbial usage, indicating a pattern of parallel development between the two functions.
