Abstract
Because degrammaticalization runs counter to the general direction of language change, it is a rare phenomenon, and the paucity of clear examples makes typological classification difficult. Korean, however, as an agglutinative language, has a highly developed system of affixal elements, and thus a relatively large number of suffixal Sino-Korean morphemes that can attach to phrasal units. In recent Korean, many of these suffixal Sino-Korean morphemes have weakened their bonding with the base and have acquired a certain degree of independence, developing into less grammatical or more lexical elements. Accordingly, this study undertakes a broad survey of suffixal Sino-Korean morphemes that combine with phrasal units and classifies them within the framework of degrammaticalization. The mechanism of degrammaticalization in suffixal Sino-Korean morphemes is understood here as de-bonding. Degrammaticalization by de-bonding refers primarily to a process in which dependent forms with affixal properties loosen their cohesion with the base, become separated from it, and come to combine with phrasal units. Furthermore, this paper subdivides the subtypes of degrammaticalization more finely than previous studies.
