Abstract

Sin Gyeong-rim, through travel poetry, explores the impact of tourists’ gaze on the lives of indigenous people. The gaze implies power dynamics in human relationships, where the subject who gazes and the object being gazed upon represent a hierarchical relationship. The poet critiques the tourist’s gaze because it marginalizes the lives of indigenous people by centering on capital. Tourists, equipped with the mechanisms of capital power, consume the lives of indigenous people as commodities. Additionally, the camera-like gaze of tourists objectifies the indigenous people as subjects. Thus, Sin Gyeong-rim demonstrates that the alienation and sorrow of those living in impoverished travel destinations are not formed internally but are due to the external gaze directed at them. Furthermore, the poet cynically portrays how the indigenous people themselves become commercialized and subjects under the gaze and capital of tourists. The poet indicates that there exists an asymmetrical gaze in the seemingly neutral dichotomous relationship between the consumer (tourist) and the consumed (indigenous people) at travel destinations. This is revealed through the micro-power of tourists widely spread in impoverished travel destinations, and the indigenous people experience coloniality based on the capital power of tourists.
