초록
The aim of the study is to unveil the grammaticalization process of imperative forms followed by the Manchu postposition manggi, abbreviated as ‘IMP manggi’ constructions. Unlike ‘canonical manggi’, which includes manggi preceded by the past participle ending -HA, ‘IMP manggi’ constructions convey anteriority. The meaning of anteriority cannot be directly derived from the imperative itself, necessitating an alternative explanation for the origin of these constructions. To address this, the paper examines the growing prevalence of ‘IMP manggi’ in Manchu literature from the 17th to the 19th century, proposing that this tendency may be influenced by the bridging context baha manggi. The verb baha- ‘to get’ shares the same form for imperative and past participle as ‘baha,’ and the construction baha manggi could potentially involve a second-person subject. This could lead to confusion in distinguishing between the imperative and past participle forms with baha in baha manggi. Additionally, the verb meaning ‘to get’ often acquires the meaning of anteriority across languages due to its close semantic relation. Lastly, since manggi next to baha inherently implies temporal sequences, baha in baha manggi might be reinterpreted as the imperative form carrying the meaning of anteriority. This transformative process could extend to verbs with irregular imperative forms. Consequently, ‘IMP manggi’ takes on a distinct meaning compared to ‘canonical manggi’ playing a unique role in discourse.
