본 연구에서는 우선 공감의 어원을 근거로 이의 개념을 정의하고, 공감의 구성요소와 발달기제를 문헌을 중심으로 고찰한다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 공감이 지니고 있는 윤리적 의의를 규범적 차원에서 제시한다. empathy는 다른 사람의 특수한 정서적 상태를 이해하고 함께 그와 공유하는 것을 말하고, sympathy는 타인의 안녕에 대한 관심과 관련된다. 공감의 구성요소에 관한 논의는 기존의 인지적 차원과 정서적 차원 이외에 생리기능을 추가하고 있다. 공감은 인간의 생존가치를 고양시키고 인간의 도덕적 정서의 단초를 제공할 뿐만 아니라 친사회적 행동을 매개하며 정의와 배려 도덕원리의 토대를 제공해준다는 차원에서 윤리적 의의를 내포하고 있다.
Abstract
The primary purpose of this study is to explore the concept, the components, and the ethical significances of empathy. The empathy means one understands the other's specific emotional state, sympathy implies one concerns the other's well-being. Traditionally, an argument on the components of empathy is converged upon a cognitive and a emotional element, but in recently years, the argument is extended to a physiological element. The ethical significances of empathy are as follows: First, the empathy elongates human' survival value. Second, the empathy gives a motive of human's moral emotion. Third, the empathy intermediates prosocial behavior. Lastly, the empathy furnishes a foundation of justice and caring moral principle.
