초록

도덕교육에서 내러티브 접근을 도모하는 것은 필수불가결한 일이다. 이는 동서고금의 도덕교육적 전통과 학교 현장의 실제 및 이론적 측면 모두에서 그러하다. 문제는 이렇듯 중요함에도 불구하고 도덕교육 분야에서의 내러티브 접근은 그동안 그 학문적 기반에 대한 근본적인 탐구를 소홀히 해왔음은 물론 그 본질과 특성에 맞는 제대로 된 운영 측면에서도 미흡함을 보여왔다. 그리고 이러한 문제는 새로운 초등 도덕과 교과용 도서의 개발을 도모해 가고 있는 이 즈음에 와서는 더더욱 절박한 일이 되고 있다. 이 연구는 바로 이러한 문제의식에 기초하여 초등 도덕교육에서의 내러티브 접근이 어떤 학문적․이론적 기반을 가지고 있고 그 주된 특장점은 무엇이며, 어떠한 모습의 내러티브 접근이 모색될 수 있고 또 그 한계와 극복의 방향은 무엇인지 등을 탐구해 보고자 하였다. 그리하여 이를 위해 구체적으로 도덕교육에서의 내러티브 접근의 학문적․이론적 토대로서 도덕철학적 기초와 심리학적 기초를 탐구하는 한편, 이를 실제로 구현하기 위한 내러티브 접근의 유형과 방안들을 내용 중심과 과정 중심의 측면에서 숙고해 보고, 이어 초등 도덕교육에서 내러티브 접근을 도모함에 있어 그 한계와 유의점 및 극복 방안 등에 대해서 논의하였다.

Abstract

The purpose of this essay was to study of the narrative approach to moral education in elementary schools. Although we have used a lot of moral stories, we actually not only don`t know the narrative approach very well but also don`t have full competence needed for using that approach. Moreover, because we are now on the way of producing the textbooks for elementary moral education, it is the urgent task for us to study the narrative approach to moral education. The contents that I inquired in this essay are as follows. First, the narrative approach to moral education has the moral philosophical ground that is given from virtue ethics. As A. MacIntyre argued, human is essentially a story-telling creature and narratives are indispensible for acquiring virtues and character. Second, seeing on the basis of psychological researches, our moral experiences and moral development are essentially associated with narratives. So, we have to use the narratives very effectively. Third, for the teaching-learning methods based on narrative approach, two levels of four methods can be contrived. one is intuitive level that is constructed with traditional story-telling and telling one`s moral experiences and the other is critical level that includes moral dilemma story and dialogical narrative based on care ethics. Finally, narrative approach has some criticisms such as no criterion, relativism, and indoctrination, etc. So, whenever taking the narrative approach, we really need to have objective attitude, universal point of view, and critical thinking.
