Abstract

Little research has been conducted to investigate the effect of emotional labor in the public sector. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of emotional labor on turnover intention among Korean local government employees. The data used in this work were collected from a survey of 224 Korean local government employees working in the Seoul area. A structural equation modelling approach was used to test causal hypotheses. The empirical analyses found that deep acting was positively related to job satisfaction but negatively related to turnover intention. Also, job satisfaction was negatively related to turnover intention. The empirical findings of this study have some pretty obvious implications. Managers need to promote deep acting over surface acting. By doing so, they can make employees happier and reduce their turnover intentions.
