Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between emotional labor and burnout in Korean local government context. Drawing from conservation of resources theory, self-determination theory, and public service motivation theory, this study aimed to examine the moderating role of public service motivation in the emotional labor-burnout relationship. Based on a survey of 1,482 local government employees, this study finds that public service motivation significantly moderates the relationship between emotional labor and burnout. This study contributes to better understanding of the importance of public service motivation in terms of reliving the negative effects of emotional labor in the public sector.
