본 논문은 하이데거 전기철학에서 후기철학에 걸쳐 상상력 개념의 변화의 추이를 밝힘으로써 근대적인 상상력 개념이 현대적인 개념으로 변용되는 방식을 살펴보고자 한다. 1920년대까지 하이데거는 상상력을 비중 있게 다룬다. 특히 『칸트와 형이상학의 문제』에서 그는 칸트의 상상력을 새롭게 해석하면서 자신의 개념(‘시간’)으로 전유하고자 한다. 전기 하이데거가 전유한 내용을 요약하자면, 상상력이란 (1) 종합적 인식의 근원이고, (2) 유한성의 징표이며, (3) 근원적으로 시간이고, (4) 어떤 타자적인 힘이다. 이와 같이 하이데거는 칸트의 근대적 상상력 개념에 바탕을 두면서도 그것을 초과하는 개념적 단초를 제시하고 있다. 그러나 탈근대적 상상력의 얼개를 구상했음에도 불구하고, 결국 하이데거는 상상력 개념이 내포하고 있는 근대 철학적 함의 때문에, 더 이상 그것을 사용하지 않는 것처럼 보인다. 그러나 하이데거가 완전히 상상 개념을 포기한 것은 아니다. 후기 하이데거는 조심스럽게 다시 이 개념을 사용한다. 물론 상상은 이전과는 전혀 다른 위상을 가진다. 즉 초기의 상상력이 철학적 사유의 핵심부를 지칭하는 말이라면, 후기 하이데거에게 상상은 철학과 공속관계에 있는 시(또는 예술)에게 귀속된다. 전자가 칸트의 근대적 상상력 개념과의 대결의 결과로서 철학 내부에 상상력의 자리를 마련한 것이라면, 후자는 전자를 바탕으로 철학의 외부(하지만 철학과 공속하는 예술)에 상상력의 자리를 이전 시킨 것이라 말할 수 있다. 이런 점에서 하이데거는 후기철학에서도 상상력을 포기하지 않는다. 다만 상상력이 차지하는 위상에 변화가 있었을 뿐이다. 또한 이러한 상상력 위상의 변천은 ‘상상력 귀환의 현대적 조건들’로서 이해될 수 있다. 그 조건들이란 (1) 상상에서 제작 형이상학, 인간중심적 형이상학의 흔적을 지워야 한다는 것과, (2) 시(혹은 예술)적 사유로서 이미지 또는 상상(력)은 존재 개방의 측면에서 철학적 사유와 대등할 수 있어야 한다는 조건이 그것이다.
Abstract
This study aims to clarify how the modern imagination has been transformed into the post-modern imagination. To forward our study, I will search for a topological shift of the imagination concept, which M. Heidegger has developed. Especially Heidegger wants to appropriate the imagination for his own concept(time), interpreting Kant’s imagination newly. In the Heidegger’s early philosophy, the imagination is (1) the source of synthetic knowledge, (2) the mark of the finitude, (3) a kind of time, (4) the force of the other in the self. He constituted the concept of the imagination which surpassed the modern understanding, but he abandons it afterward in appearance, because of the implications of the modern philosophy in it. But Heidegger did not give up the imagination completely. He has again used it carefully. Of course this imagination has quite other position than before in his thinking system. While the early imagination has placed on the center of the philosophical thinking, the late imagination has ascribed to the poem which is belonging together (zusammengehören) philosophy. The former is the position of imagination that results from process of the appropriating the modern imagination, the latter is out of philosophy, i.e. in the poem (or art) belonging together philosophy. In this respect, Heidegger has not abandoned the imagination to the last, but changed only its topos. In this topological transition of imagination, we can find post-modern conditions for the return of imagination. (1) We must erase all traces of the anthropocentric metaphysics in the modern imagination. (2) Imagination as a poetical thinking is not the same with the philosophical thinking, but it is as a unique friend of philosophy, indispensable for the understanding of Being.
