Abstract
Heidegger’s Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics has sparked controversy over interpretive violence, with differing views on its meaning and value. A common perspective holds that Heidegger’s interpretation of Kant is violent, as it forcefully aligns Kant’s philosophy with Heidegger’s own goals, making it valuable only for understanding Heidegger. In contrast, this paper argues that Heidegger’s interpretation also offers significant insights into Kant’s philosophy. First, I confirm that Heidegger’s rejection of the epistemological reading of Critique of Pure Reason in favor of ontology or metaphysics is not violent. Next, I examine how Heidegger’s focus fundamentally concerns the grounding of metaphysics. I then analyze how Heidegger reconfigures Kant’s language and why this process cannot be dismissed as violence. Finally, I clarify where Kant and Heidegger diverge despite their shared concerns.
