Abstract

Thought experiment is widely used not only in science, but also in philosophy. Some philosophers, however, argue that philosophical thought experiments are just inferior to scientific ones, and even pernicious so that it may be obstacle to the development of knowledge. There are two reasons. First, the imaginary situations that philosophical thought experiments render are mostly ambiguous, second, the intuitions that are methodologically used in philosophical ones cannot give clear evidences to the conclusion. The article’s primary purpose is trying to defend philosophical thought experiments against these criticisms. For this aim, we explore the definition of thought experiments in chapter 2. Next, we examine whether thought experiments are arguments or not, and then presume them as arguments in chapter 3. In chapter 4, we classify thought experiments into three categories in the sense of their roles in philosophical discourses; this classification is useful when we defend thought experiments from criticisms. In Chapter 5 and 6, we scrutinize two given criticisms against philosophical thought experiments, and then reply to them. We conclude that despite some pernicious ones, there are relatively many benign thought experiments in philosophy.
