Abstract
After psychology (1818) and pedagogy (1813), aesthetics was the last philosophical discipline that Schleiermacher devoted himself to for his own lectures. He had already been preoccupied with aesthetic problems in his youth, was a co-founder of early Berlin Romanticism, and presented the concept of art religion in his “Oratory on Religion” (1799). Schleiermacher said that aesthetics is one of the important disciplines especially related to ethics and that it must clarify the connection between individual art and the ethical process. Schleiermacher lectured on aesthetics at the University of Berlin in 1819, 1825, and 1832/33, and also wrote a paper for the Prussian Academy of Sciences entitled “On the Scope of the Concept of Art and Its Theory”. He explained the origin of art in terms of emotions and individual moods (Stimmung) in aesthetics and justified its close connection with religion. Schleiermacher's lectures on ethics also highlight this closeness between art and religion. Schleiermacher's approach, which focuses on the production of works of art and the systematic determination of individual artistic fields, has historical significance in the philosophy of art that goes back to Schelling and Schiller, who were both German idealists and critics of Kant's philosophy. In this way, Schleiermacher's aesthetics is one of the lesser-known theories in the flow of German idealism, but it can be seen as revealing once again the flow of German idealism, which is the overcoming and development of Kant's philosophy. In addition, due to the influence of Steffens, who supplemented Schelling's natural philosophy, it can be considered the most notable field in line with the flow of modern art, as it contains a deep understanding of human emotion and natural science with art. Schleiermacher's aesthetics shared the same historical trends of the time as Hegel's philosophy of art, and thus emphasized the connection between various historical developments and social systems with respect to works of art and artistic practice.
