지리 수업에서 후각 요소 도입이 학습자에게 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

본 연구에서는 지리 텍스트에 후각 요소를 도입하는 이론적 토대를 마련하고, 실제 실험을 통해 그 효과를 검증하였다. 실험 결과, 후각 요소가 도입된 텍스트에 대한 학습자들의 흥미와 선호도가 높았으며, 후각 요소가 도입된 텍스트가 학습한 지역에 대한 관심 증대에도 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 후각 요소가 기억의 맥락으로 작용하여 학습 내용 파지력도 향상되었다.최근 사회적으로 후각에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있지만 지리학과 지리교육에서 다양한 감각 경험에 대한 관심은 그리 높지 않다. 그러나 지역이나 장소를 구성함에 있어 후각적 요소가 독특하고 중요한 부분을 형성하며 또한 후각 관련 기억이 다른 감각 관련 기억보다 오래 지속된다는 기존의 연구 결과를 고려할 때, 지리교육에 후각 요소를 도입하는 것은 효과적인 학습 전략이 될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper tried to make the theoretical bases to introduce an olfactory component in geography text and verified it by experiments. The results of the experiments indicate that learners show stronger interest in and higher preference to the text with an olfactory component than the other text without an olfactory component and learner?s interest in the region studied increases when an olfactory component is incorporated. Furthermore, learners? memory retention increases as an olfactory component functions as a context for memory.Current days have witnessed increasing interest in olfactory sense in many different sectors in society. However, geography education, the goal of which is to facilitate students? geographic perspectives on a region or a place using diverse senses, has shown very little consideration of sensuous experiences. Considering that the existing studies which demonstrate that an olfactory component is a significant construct of a region or a space in perception, and that olfactory memory lasts longer than other forms of memory, incorporation of olfactory components into geography education will be an effective methodology.
