Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the learning effect in geography education caused by the presentation methods of texts and pictures on learning materials. After developing four types of experimental materials, we conducted the survey with 441 middle school students in three different middle schools located in Seoul and Incheon. The results are as followed. First, the experimental material only with texts is more effective than the materials only with pictures. Second, it is not necessarily true that dual coding material is more effective than single coding materials. Third, the analysis of the effectiveness of materials related to the level of prior knowledge shows that text only material is always the most effective to all groups of students. In conclusion, even though there is consistency and relevancy between texts and pictures in a material, it is not effective in terms of learning if the student’s level is not considered.
