Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a conceptual model of instructional design for personalized flipped learning in higher education settings for more effective design of flipped classrooms. This study emphasizes personalized learning, which has recently received attention as promoting individual learning paths and experiences. This study employed the design and development research method. The initial model and design principals, including the main components “student agency,” “data-driven instruction,” and “data-driven learning,” were developed based on the literature review and case studies. An expert review was conducted to validate the initial model and design principals, which were then finalized through iterative development processes. The result was a conceptual model with 10 design principals and 23 specific guidelines for designing personalized flipped learning. The model and principals developed in this study underscore data-driven instruction and learning in pre-, in-, and after-class learning environments. Furthermore, this study’s discussion of how to incorporate the perspective of personalized learning in flipped classrooms is based on not only a theoretical framework but also practical perspectives. Implications for future research are provided.
