Abstract
Team-based learning is an effective instructional approach that promotes learning through interaction. However, classrooms based on team-based learning present structural challenges in the assessment of individual students’ participation. This study aimed to examine the validity of peer assessment by designing and implementing a lesson in which students evaluate each other’s participation following a group discussion. The lesson was developed through expert consultation and a pilot study, and it was implemented as a one-time session in three second-grade middle school classes. Students completed reading tasks individually and, then engaged in team discussions to share their understanding and jointly determine their responses. Then, they conducted peer assessments of each group member’s participation before completing a survey regarding the lesson’s perceived difficulty and satisfaction. Peer assessment scores were found to be strongly correlated with expert evaluations. Moreover, the students reported low perceived difficulty for the team-based learning and peer assessment activities, while expressing high satisfaction with the lesson overall. This study’s findings suggest that peer assessment may serve as a valid and pedagogically meaningful tool in the context of team-based learning. They also indicate the practical applicability of the proposed classroom design in real educational settings.
