Abstract
This study analyzed preservice teachers’ perceptions and needs for digital education courses to explore effective directions for such programs. Surveys were collected from 122 preservice teachers(73 course takers, 49 non-takers) at five Korean universities. Analyses included frequency analysis, t-tests, analysis of variance, Importance-Performance Analysis(IPA), Borich needs assessment, the Locus for Focus(LFF) model, and text mining(TF, and TF-IDF). Results revealed higher perceived necessity among upper-grade students. participants preferred practice-oriented, instruction focused on tool-utilization, with assessments emphasizing and portfolios. Common reasons for non-enrollment were the non-mandatory status, lack of awareness, and limited availability, indicating needs for better promotion and accessibility. Needs analysis identified Generative AI, various digital tools, and EdTech for improvement, due to high impertance but lower performance. Text mining highlighted “copyright” as the most frequent keyword, indicating strong digital ethics awareness. alongside high demand for video production, PowerPoint, and Excel skills. These findings recommend strengthening practical, field-oriented digital technology training and ethical responsibility in preservice education. Implications include targeting upper-grade students, designing practice focused curricula, enhancing AI and EdTech competencies, and expanding digital ethics education. This study contributes to improving preservice teachers’ digital competencies and teacher training quality.
