오늘날 악셀 호네트의 인정이론은 설득력 있는 규범적 사회이론으로 인정받는다. 그런데 그간 인정이론에 대한 논의는 주로 이른바 ‘사회적인’ 영역에 해당하는 권리와 연대라는 형식에 대해 이루어졌다. 본 연구는 호네트에 의해 세 가지 인정형식의 하나로 제시된 것이지만 아직 풍부하게 논의되지 않은 사랑에 주목한다. 호네트는 『인정투쟁』에서 도널드 위니컷의 대상관계이론에 근거해 아이와 어머니 사이의 관계에서 사랑의 전형을 발견한다. 반면 『분배냐, 인정이냐?』와 이후의 작업들에서 사랑은 보다 동등한 상호관계에 해당하는 것으로서 제시되며 돌봄의 ‘상호성’ 또한 강조된다. 한편으로 이와 같은 전환은 두 가지 이점을 갖는다. 모성애의 전형에서 벗어난 사랑은 이제 보다 다양한 관계와 행위에 적용되는 규범적 개념으로 기능할 뿐 아니라, 친밀한 관계에서 우리가 따라야 하는 상호 규범이 무엇인지도 분명하게 해 준다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 변화는 양가적인데, 그것이 비대칭적인 돌봄에 대한 관심을 약화시키는 귀결도 불러오기 때문이다.
Abstract
Axel Honneth’s recognition theory is widely acknowledged as a compelling normative social theory. However, discussions on recognition theory have primarily centered around the ‘social’ domains, traditionally considered public spheres, such as rights and solidarity. This study emphasizes the concept of love, which, despite being one of forms of recognition proposed by Honneth, has not received extensive attention. On one hand, in Struggle for Recognition, Honneth draws upon Donald Winnicott's object relations theory to explorer the essence of love within the asymmetrical relationship between a child and their mother. On the other hand, in Distribution or Recognition? and subsequent researches, love is portrayed as a reciprocal relationship. This shift enables a more comprehensive exploration of love across diverse relationships, extending beyond the prototype of maternal love, and provides a clearer understanding of what the reciprocity of love means. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that this change also overlooks the asymmetry of care in his theory.
