초록

자서전은 잊을 수 없는 기억들의 모음이다. 헤프너와 슈테른은 중국 망명을 통하여 고통스런 체험을 하였다. 그들은 결코 잊을 수 없는 ‘수정의 밤’과 국경을 넘을 때 두려움을 경험했다. 이러한 일련의 트라우마가 그들의 기억에 깊게 남아서 그들의 자서전을 형성하였다. 또 자서전은 의도했던 또는 의도하지 않았던 허구적인 요소를 담고 있다. 비록 자서전이 체험이라는 사실을 근거로 쓰였다 하더라도 자서전에서 기술된 사건들은 다분히 허구적 요소를 포함한다. 왜냐하면 현재 시점에서 쓰인 자서전은 현재의 기억과 과거의 체험 사이에 간극이 존재하기 때문이다. 간극을 형성하는 기억의 한계로 인하여 부족한 공간은 작가의 창작에 의존할 수밖에 없다. 자서전은 저자에게 절대적인 영향을 끼친 기억들이 살아있는 곳이다. 헤프너와 슈테른의 자서전에서 유대인 공동체가 자주 언급되었던 이유는 그들에게 절대적인 영향을 끼친 기구이기 때문이다. 자신의 기억에 한계를 느낀 헤프너는 지인인 역사학자와 동료들의 기억에 의존해서 자서전을 서술했다. 이러한 것을 볼 때 자서전은 개인의 역사일 뿐만 아니라 체험한 사람들의 공동의 역사이기도 하다.
