Abstract
This study examines the historical representation of gender equality in French children’s literature and explore its potential use in gender equality education. Through an analysis of literary movements and policy developments, it identifies how themes of gender equality emerged in children’s literature following the 1968 youth literature movement and the feminist publishing initiatives of the 1970s. The educational significance of literature was later reinforced through revisions to education laws. In 2013, the French Ministry of Education launched the first nationwide pilot program, ABCD de l’ égalité, which incorporated children’s books as educational materials. However, some picture books depicting “masculine women,” “feminine men,” and same-sex couples provoked strong opposition from conservative groups. Despite These social debates, this study underscores that children’s literature can serve as a valuable educational tool to raise public awareness of gender-related issues.
