Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the value and role of Children’s English storybooks as teaching materials that actively draw attention on thoughts and opinions on gender issues. In this study, based on the linguistic effectiveness and value of reading English books, active utilization of children’s English literature is recommended, while books that are likely to create biased thinking and prejudice should be filtered out, and books that can foster critical acceptance and flexible thinking should be selected. In particular, atypical gender storybooks and fractured fairy tales are introduced. Those storybooks that make young learners share thoughts and opinions on gender issues can be helpful in teaching materials for field teachers. Gender education in a changed society should aim to improve understanding and empathy for other genders, respect individual values and capabilities apart from gender, and cooperate as equal members of society.
