Abstract
When Huldrich Zwingli began his reformation in Zürich, many religious, social, and political allies helped him to accomplish it in Switzerland. One of the most important was Katharina von Zimmern, who has been relatively neglected in research. Katharina von Zimmern, the Abbess of Fraumünster, had a very high profile in 16th Century Zürich. Her contribution had a great impact on the Swiss Reformation. The four parts of this article elaborate how her life and work helped Zwingli’s reformation: first, women in the Reformation and social-cultural change; second, the socio-political context of Zürich; third, a chronological account of her life and achievements; fourth, procedures and documents for the transfer of Fraumünster. Since she voluntarily handed over all rights which belonged to Fraumünster including financial, political privileges and property to the City of Zürich, this reformation passed smoothly and peacefully. In this sense, she was the most important co-worker of the Swiss Reformation.
