Abstract

This paper examines the philosophical implications and interpretative issues surrounding Śāntarakṣita’s theory of appearances (ākāra) within the context of Late Madhyamaka thought. Śāntarakṣita, a key figure in the synthesis of Madhyamaka and Yogācāra, developed a refined theory of the relationship between existence and cognition, integrating the doctrine of emptiness with Yogācāra epistemology. His ekānekasvabhāvaviyoga (the exclusion of singular and plural natures) argument offers a new methodological approach to demonstrating the absence of inherent existence. He also presents a dual-layered view of conventional truth, distinguishing between “true conventionality” and “false conventionality,” the former grounded in causal efficacy and the latter in conceptual fabrication. Although this position closely parallels Bhāviveka’s view of conventionality, Śāntarakṣita has often been classified as a proponent of the “Yogācāra- Madhyamaka” school that denies external objects. Matsumoto Shiro challenges this classification by interpreting the 64th verse of Śāntarakṣita’s Madhyamakālaṃkāra and its commentary as affirming the existence of external forms (rūpa, ākāra) on a conventional level, thereby criticizing Tsong kha pa’s later interpretation, which emphasizes the absence of external objects even conventionally. This study, therefore, pursues three aims: first, to critically analyze Śāntarakṣita’s theory of appearances; second, to explore Tsong kha pa’s interpretation of this theory within the framework of ākāra-realism; and third, to evaluate Matsumoto’s critique in light of broader contemporary Buddhist scholarship. Through this inquiry, the paper seeks to reconstruct the complex hermeneutical landscape regarding the status of appearances in Madhyamaka philosophy.
