Abstract
In the late 19th century, Joseon began entering the modern international order by signing treaties of amity and commerce with Western powers. Starting with a treaty with Japan in 1876, Joseon established full-fledged diplomatic relations in Western style through treaties with the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and others from 1882 onward. Based on these treaties, foreign legations were established in Joseon and diplomats were dispatched, but these developments had limited effect in resolving internal turmoil. Most of the treaties contained unfavorable terms for Joseon and led to unequal diplomatic and trade relations. Although some treaty provisions reflected the realities of Joseon or the international situation at the time, they also revealed Joseon's diplomatic weaknesses. In particular, the Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) principle worked to Joseon’s disadvantage in that historical context. The treaties of amity and commerce marked a significant turning point in Joseon's diplomatic history and had lasting impacts on the Korean Peninsula’s later history and international relations, highlighting the importance of diplomatic flexibility and international cooperation.
