Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct suicide prevention discourse by applying Karen Barad's ‘agential realism’ within the ontological framework of new materialism. Existing suicide prevention education has relied on dichotomies like ‘risk–non-risk,’ reducing suicide to an individual's pathological problem. In contrast, agential realism understands suicide as a ‘relational phenomenon’ arising within the entanglement of human and non-human, material and discursive agents. The agential cut signifies an ethical act of forming boundaries within this entanglement, and the resulting response-ability functions as the core ethics of suicide prevention. Therefore, suicide prevention education must shift beyond technical approaches focused on controlling risk, transforming into educational practices that reconfigure sensitivity towards life and relationships. Furthermore, it must embrace ethics of entanglement, which explores the meaning of life within relationships with non-human beings and the material world, moving beyond human-centered ethics. From this perspective, suicide prevention can be redefined as a collective ethical practice of jointly responding to the shared conditions of life.
