버라드의 행위적 실재주의는 신물질주의에서 가장 많이 논의되고 또중요하게 언급되는 이론 중 하나다. 이 연구에서 나는 버라드에 대한 기존의 논의를 발전시키되 특히 실재와 물질 개념에 초점을 맞춘다. 먼저 실재주의와 구성주의 입장 그리고 버틀러의 수행성 개념에 대한 버라드의 비판으로부터 두 가지 "물질적 전회"의 계기들을 살펴본다. 다음으로는 버라드가 어떻게 보어의 양자역학 철학에서 하이젠베르크의 불확정성 원리와 구분되는지 비결정성 혹은 비분리성 원리를 발견하고, 이것이 하이젠베르크의 불확정성 원리와 다른지, 그리고 이로부터 행위적 실재주의의 논제와 주요 요소인 전체, 현상, 장치 등을 추출하는지 보이는 한편, 이로부터 물질 및 물질주의에 대한 함축, 특히 물질의 행위성과 행위성의 물질성을 도출한다. 이에 따르면 물질은 계속해서 물질화되는 또는 “물의를 빚는” 과정에 있는 역동적인 행위성이다. 실재는 이러한 행위성들이 이루는 비분리적이고 관계적이며 내부-작용적인 전체로서 자연과 문화, 물질과 의미, 주체와 객체 등 이분법적 관계항들에 선재하면서 이러한 항들을 결과물로 갖는다. 이처럼 행위적 실재주의는 실재주의와 구성주의의 표상주의 전제를 극복하는 한편으로 관계주의적 존재론을 바탕으로 관계 또는 내부-작용들로부터 관계항들이 생성되는 계기들을 기술함으로써 물질 나아가 실재의 행위성과 역동성을 드러낸다.
Abstract
This paper develops a previous preliminary study on Karen Barad’s agential realism, focusing on the concept of reality and that of matter. I first discuss two "material turns" in Barad’s critique of realism and constructivism, as well as her analysis of Butler’s concept of performativity. Then I turn to Bohr’s quantum interpretation following Barad’s reading insisting on ontology rather than epistemology and on indeterminacy (or inseparability) rather than complementarity. I will then be led to characterize Bohr’s realism, characterized by three main concepts: the whole, the phenomenon, and the apparatus. Lastly, I discuss the concept of matter in terms of agency (the agency of matter and the materiality of agency), proposing an analysis of the word "matter" as well as its derivative gerund "mattering." The reality is thus revealed as an "entanglement of matter and meaning," rather than being subjected to dichotomies such as nature-culture or material-discursive, functioning as their very condition of possibility, while matter is continuously in the process of materialization by its own dynamics of agencies.
