Abstract

In this article, I discuss the conceptual structure of Karen Barad’s “agential realism.” which is an ethico-onto-epistemological framework that holds that humans and nonhumans, subjects and objects, discourse and matter are not separate but entangled, and that phenomena and meaning are co-constituted through their intra-actions Drawing on Barad’s major works, this research offers a theoretical examination while also introducing critical perspectives from various scholars and articulating various counterarguments. This study argues that Barad’s notion of “entanglement” extends beyond the mere deconstruction of the subject; rather, it reconfigures ethics at the ontological level. Through the concepts of “response-ability” and “self-touching,” Barad demands a new ethical sensibility. Furthermore, her notion of “justice-to-come” is presented as a means of reconceptualizing justice and responsibility through the entanglement of temporality and alterity. In conclusion, this study contends that Barad’s agential realism is not simply theoretically radical but that it serves as a philosophical resource that expands ethical and political imagination in response to the complex crises of our time.
