Abstract
The purpose of this study is to clarify the concept of the “education-centred society” proposed by Philip Kitcher and to discuss its educational implications. Kitcher’s core claim is that a transition to an education-centred society must take place. Although most countries today exhibit the characteristics of an economy-centred society, He argues three core educational aims: capacity for self-sustenance, the cultivation of citizenship, and self-fulfilment. An education-centred society places emphasis on the human project. By “human project” he means the pursuit of human-ness and communal growth that transcend generations, and individuals lead lives characterised by the pursuit of fulfilment through other-directed practice. For an education-centred society to materialise, the school curriculum must also change. Kitcher contends that the natural sciences, the arts, the humanities, and the social sciences must be designed in different ways than they currently are. His idea that a society centred on education can promote individual fulfilment and strengthen the health of democratic society also resonates strongly in our context.
