Abstract
Classifiers are a highly distinctive and essential component of Chinese grammar, and they are also a crucial feature distinguishing Chinese from Indo-European languages. In the 19th century,Robert Morrison, the first Protestant missionary to China, completed A Grammar of the Chinese Language in 1811. This was the first Chinese grammar book systematically written in English by a Western scholar, providing a relatively comprehensive and systematic record and summary of Chinese classifiers. This paper first introduces Morrison’s life and academic background, outlines the compilation process of A Grammar of the Chinese Language, and then examines his understanding of the Chinese classifier system as reflected in this work. In exploring the semantic features of classifiers, the paper focuses on their modal and stylistic nuances: for example,“位” and “员” convey respect,“夥” carries a derogatory meaning, and “帖” implies formality and solemnity. From a diachronic perspective, the paper further discusses the evolution and disappearance of certain classifiers from the early 19th century to the present, such as the elimination of “领”, the replacement of “科” with “棵”,the standardization between “匹” and “疋”, and the substitution of classical classifiers like “端” and “欵” by the more general and widely used “件”. This evolutionary process is closely related to changes in social systems, modes of production and daily life,as well as national language policies, reflecting the principle of linguistic economy and a trend toward simplification. High-frequency,general-purpose classifiers have gradually replaced older, semantically narrow and stylistically restricted ones, illustrating the self-adjustment and optimization of Chinese in adapting to social development and communicative efficiency. This study argues that A Grammar of the Chinese Language not only presents the richness of the classifier system in mid-to-late Qing dynasty Chinese, but also reflects Morrison’s cross-cultural understanding and interpretation of Chinese classifiers. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the historical evolution and developmental mechanisms of Chinese classifiers.
