Abstract

Philosophers and scientists have struggled for decades to define music’s semiology. Music presents a unique philosophical problem; unlike other art forms such as painting and sculpture, music is not a real object that exists in the physical world, making it more difficult to describe. According to Kantian thinkers, music serves no function and is just aesthetic. On the other hand, theorists Deryck Cooke and Leonard Meyer believe that the meaning of music is intrinsically tied to emotion. This paper attempts to shed additional light on the riddle of musical semantics by examining many hypotheses which unraveled as the philosophy of music evolved during the era. Focusing on four different issues through qualitative research methods to understand the evolution of musical meaning in the late 18th and 19th centuries. First, What role did musical semantics play in late 18th and 19th centuries? Second, Examined through the lenses of musicology During the period, what were the important aesthetic ideas in music? Third, How has philosophy influenced the popularity of classical and romantic music? Fourth, How did musical aesthetics evolve over the Romantic period? The objective of this study is to discover if music may be seen as embodying autonomous importance, a question that will be addressed via a study of the field’s varied theoretical perspectives. This is a complex undertaking, and although it is impossible to study every theoretical perspective within the framework of this research, hope and anticipate advancing certain judgments and ideas on the grounds of musicology, history and philosophy.
