영한 신문 기사의 ‘트랜스젠더’ 지칭어 번역 양상 연구

본 논문은 영어 신문 기사의 ‘트랜스젠더’를 7명의 전문번역가들이 한국어로 지칭하여 번역할 때 어떠한 번역 양상이 표출되는지 살펴보는 것이다. 이러한 분석을 위해, 선행연구에서는 목표 텍스트에 해당하는 한국어의 대명사 특성을 살펴보았다. 또한, 연구 방법으로는 The Korea Times에서 ‘transgender’를 검색하여 한 편은 유명 연예인인 하리수 관련 기사를 선정하였고, 다른 한 편의 기사는 레이첼 레빈이라는 잘 알려지지 않은 일반인을 다룬 기사를 발췌하였다. 7명의 전문번역가가 번역한 결과물을 살펴보면, 첫째, 원천텍스트의 ‘she’, ‘her’를 고유명사로 전환하기도 하지만 목표 텍스트에 대명사 생략전략을 많이 사용하는 경향이 있었다. 둘째, 3인칭 여성 단수 대명사의 빈도수가 원천텍스트보다 현저하게 적은 번역의 경우 고유명사의 사용 빈도수가 현격히 증가하였다. 셋째, 의도적으로 목표 텍스트에서 3인칭 여성대명사 사용을 기피하는 번역가가 있었다. 결론적으로 트랜스젠더의 성 정체성 문제를 사전에 인지하고 이를 번역에 반영하려는 의도가 조사되었다. 둘째, 트랜스젠더라는 특별한 주제에 대한 민감성보다는 대명사 생략 언어인 한국어의 언어학적 영향이 더욱 큰 것으로 판단되었다.
Abstract
This paper examines what kind of translation patterns are expressed when seven professional translators refer to “transgender” in English newspaper articles into Korean. For this analysis, previous studies examined the characteristics of pronouns in Korean corresponding to the target text. In addition, as a research method, The Korea Times searched for “transgender” and selected an article related to Harisoo, a famous celebrity, and the other was elicited by named Rachel Levin. Looking at the results translated by seven professional translators, first, there was a tendency to use a lot of pronoun dropping strategies in the target text, although “she” and “her” of the source text were translated into proper nouns. Second, in the case of translation in which the frequency of third-person female singular pronoun is significantly less than that of the source text, the frequency of use of proper noun has increased significantly. Third, there was a translator who intentionally avoided the use of third-person female pronouns in the target text. In conclusion, it was found that translators had a high tendency of recognizing the gender identity problem of transgender in advance and reflecting in translation. Second, it was come to know that the linguistic influence of Korean, an pronoun-dropping language, was greater than sensitivity to the special subject of transgender.
