Abstract
This study highlighted the importance of immigrant parental involvement in understanding the relationship between parent’s length of stay and child’s academic achievement in the US. The data for this study were gathered from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS 2002), and the participants of the ELS 2002 were immigrant parents and their children (N=2,310). I used structural equation modeling (SEM) which enables a more precise estimation of the magnitude of both direct and indirect effects of these relationships. The results suggested immigrant parent’s length of stay and school-based parental involvement played an important role in child’s academic achievement. The findings also indicated that school-based parental involvement mediated between parent’s length of stay and child’s academic achievement. That is, the findings of this study implied that parental involvement plays a key role in immigrant child’s academic achievements and parent’s length of stay in line with the arguments of previous studies.
