Abstract
This study examines how immigrant generational status (first, second, and third generation) influences parental involvement in education and children's academic achievement in the United States. Using data from the ELS:2002 and structural equation modeling on a sample of 12,433 high school sophomores and their parents, the analysis shows that children of first-generation parents perform significantly worse academically than those of third-generation parents. First- and second-generation parents are less engaged in school-based activities or do not see their efforts translate effectively into academic outcomes. In contrast, home-based involvement does not vary significantly by generation, suggesting consistent support across households. These findings highlight the need for culturally and linguistically responsive support programs to strengthen school-based involvement among immigrant parents and promote equitable educational outcomes.
