Abstract
This study examines the patterns of market activity mediated by mobile phone use and its socioeconomic effects from the perspective that technology, market activity, and social relations are intertwined in North Korean society. As North Korea’s mobile communication service expands, mobile phones have become a necessity for residents in the market, and have an impact on the market development. The use of mobile phones has increased market efficiency by mediating the distribution of market information, long-distance transactions, safe transportation and remittance, and so forth. The “trust” and “cooperation” that arise from the combination of non-human and human actors in North Korea’s market activities suggest the possibility of loose solidarity forming between market participants for generating profits. The marketization of North Korea is in a process of combining with a series of technologies that create new social dynamics, and among them, the use of mobile phones by North Koreans is a critical site in which self-sustaining system is built while compensating for the deficient elements in the market.
