Abstract

Since 2000, North Korea’s people-electric power network has been restructured from a radial form centered on the national power network and village to a complex net centered on informal nodes and individuals. Individuals are the subjects of interpreting and reconstructing the ‘power grid’ black box, and its practice varies depending on region, individual characteristics, and timing. The hybrid combinations of human(people) and non-human(transformers, batteries, solar panels, and wires) have acquired some of the boost, storage, and power generation capabilities that have been monopolized by the authorities. In this process, new exclusion, conflict, and gap between the rich and the poor emerge, but the heterogeneous “socialist morality” also remains. A series of socio-technical changes are neither completely free nor completely bound in the aspect of the differential governance(political)-power(material) program established by the North Korean authorities. Detour, exclusion, and fragmentation are occurring in the “cells (daily life)” of the national supply chain, which is how North Korea’s state/ social/living world is constructed through matter today.
