Abstract

This paper critically examines the artistic mediation potential of digital video exhibitions based on original paintings, focusing on David Hockney’s Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away). It analyzes the spatial composition of the exhibition, hardware elements such as video and sound systems, and the structural arrangement of six thematic sections, exploring how viewers experience physical immersion and a sense of presence. Drawing on Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, Bolter and Grusin’s theory of remediation, and prior studies on immersive media exhibitions, the study discusses how digital exhibitions convey artistic expressions that transcend technological spectacle. It investigates how such exhibitions can preserve the formal aesthetics and artistic intent of original works while generating new, viewer-centered sensory experiences. Comparing Hockney’s exhibition with earlier digital showcases of Van Gogh and Monet, the paper identifies distinctive curatorial and planning strategies. It reinterprets the representational challenges of painting in digital contexts not as technological appropriation, but as a form of "artistic_mediation," proposing digital media exhibitions as a new format where technology, aesthetics, sensory engagement, and conceptual depth converge. The study aims to present strategies by which digital exhibitions of original paintings can preserve and reinterpret the artist's aesthetic vision. By contrasting Hockney's work with technology-driven presentations of Van Gogh and Monet, it examines potential limitations such as aesthetic distortion and reduced immersion, offering curatorial directions to address them. Furthermore, a phenomenological analysis highlights how technological transitions in visual art shape sensory experience. Based on real exhibition cases, the paper explores the potential harmony between technology and art, providing practical insights for the digitalization of paintings and the planning of media-based exhibitions.
