Abstract

Films construct social reality, and audiences imagine the world in the way the film presents it. The <The Roundup> series is the first Korean film to be a box office success, attracting 40 million viewers, but it has been also criticized for its excessive violence and the appropriateness of its depiction. This study quantitatively analyzed the extent to which good cause violence or malicious violence (criminals) is reproduced and in what context in order to explore the dual code of violence (good cause violence and malicious violence) in the <The Roundup> series. The analysis results showed that the good cause violence (by Detective Ma), who must suppress violence and eliminate criminal organizations, was depicted more frequently than the malicious violence who threaten social order. Violence of good cause was depicted in justifiable contexts, such as the performance of official duties, while malicious violence was depicted in unjustifiable contexts, such as private interests. In addition, in most cases of good cause violence, humor was applied, and the frequency of rewards was higher than the frequency of punishment. The <The Roundup> series presents ‘good cause violence = heroic acts that realize justice,’ allowing the audience to naturally acquire conventional formulas through accumulated cinematic experience.
