본 논문은 한국 전통 목공예 도구들의 의미론적 자질들을 분석한다. 인간은 도구를 사용함으로써 문화와 문명을 이룩하였다. 학제 간 연구에서 밝혀진 사실은 도구의 개발과 사용에 언어의 역할이 지대했다는 것이다. 그러므로 도구와 언어와 인간의 지성은 공진화해왔다고 말할 수 있다. 한국문화의 우수성과 독창성에서 간과되고 있는 요소 중의 하나는 한국어의 숨은 역할이라고 우리는 생각한다. 지금 현재 장인들이 사용하고 있는 전통 도구들은 모두 고유어로 이루어져 있다. 그 고유어 이름씨들의 의미 자질을 연구하는 것은 한국어 자체의 이론적 완성을 위해서 뿐만 아니라 한국 전통 문화의 이해를 위해서 필요한 일이다. 우리는 목공예 도구들을 다음의 세 가지 기준으로 분류하여 성분분석하였다: 첫째로 도구사용의 단계에 따라 마름질, 바심질, 그리고 다듬질로 나누었다. 둘째, 사용 행위 양상에 따라 8개의 동사를 추출하였다: 찍다, 패다, 켜다, 자르다, 깎다, 다듬다, 밀다, 뚫다. 마지막으로 보조도구의 동반 여부에 따라 나누었다. 결과적으로 모두 12개의 변별적 자질들을 분류하고 정의내림으로써 전통 목공예 도구와 그 사용에 대한 이해를 심화했다. 이와 같은 연구는 더 확장하고 심화시켜 한국 전통 문화의 수준 높은 이해를 증진하고 한국어의 의미영역을 정밀히 할 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This paper explores the meanings of Korean traditional woodwork tools of cutting. It is important to note that human culture has vastly evolved through interactive use of language and tools. By defining and understanding the inherent meaning and use of these traditional tools, it may therefore be possible to shed additional light on our study and understanding of the Korean language and ultimately Korean culture. The tools can be defined and classified by analysing their semantic components. Through componential analysis, woodwork crafting tools can be classified into the three criteria. First is the ‘use of the tool’. Three phases of woodwork crafting are the ‘Marum-jil’ phase, the ‘Basim-jil’ phase and the ‘Dadum-jil’ phase. Second describes the ‘behaviour actions’. Eight behaviour actions can be categorized through the use of following verbs: ‘Kyeo-da’, ‘Jaru-da’, ‘Jjik-da’, ‘Ggak-da’, ‘Mil-da’, ‘Pa-da’, ‘DDul-da’ and ‘Dadum-da’. Third is the ‘use of auxiliary tools’. Qualities of the primary tools can further be described by defining whether auxiliary tools are used to support the primary tools. Through categorizing the three groups based on 3 criteria, 12 distinctive features were identified and established.
