This study aims to clarify the semantic characteristics of sewing verbs, which form a larger lexicon concerning clothing habits. These verbs are used to describe the process of making clothes. Little attention has been paid to characterizing the verbs’ semantic distinctiveness, defining them conceptually, and finding out their etymological meanings. Thus, this study categorizes those sewing verbs through the analysis of semantic features of sewing methods and functions. Those features are related with the moving path of the sewing needle, and the shape of the stitches, function, object, or means. The proper lexical items of Korean clothes and the various aspects of sewing their seams are semantically analyzed in addition to the lexical items of the sewing methods. The central aim of this study is to argue that the semantic system of Korean sewing verbs is explainable through the approach of hyponymy-hypernymy and semantic feature classification.
