Abstract
This study examines the affective responses triggered by VR (virtual reality) images as digital objects in the Meeting You VR human documentary series (MBC Special, 2020–2024), from the perspective that data technologies in the age of artificial intelligence constitute a condition of human existence. The series gained significant public attention by providing opportunities for the living to reunite with the deceased, virtually reconstructed by AI based on past data through VR technology. On the surface, the series appears to bring the dead back into the world of the living. However, it also functions as a new form of memory production. By transforming contemporary memories into data and reproducing them as digital objects, the series evokes the ontological presence of data in the AI era beyond visual representation. It further elicits affective experiences through interactions with personal and collective memory. Accordingly, this study analyzes the affective dynamics generated by VR images as digital objects in the Meeting You series and discusses how they suggest new modes of memory and a posthuman ethics in the context of artificial intelligence.
