Abstract
This article examines how Jean-Luc Godard conceptualized cinema and television through his television film Grandeur et décadence d'un petit commerce de cinéma (1986). The film was produced during the 1980s, a period in which control over the French film industry was shifting toward television broadcasters. It was also a time when the generation of the New Wave was withdrawing from the cinematic scene. For these reasons, the film is permeated with nostalgia and lamentation for the decline of cinema. Grandeur et décadence d'un petit commerce de cinéma is a work about the process of making a film. As the filmmaking process is vividly depicted, the ontological questions about cinema that Godard had long pursued are continuously raised. Through an analysis of the film's form, narrative, and characters, this article examines the self-reflexive questions that Godard poses about cinema itself. Within the film, television is presented as another threatening force that accelerates the death of cinema. Whereas cinema, for Godard, is a medium of ‘projection’ and a medium of memory, television is a medium of ‘transmission’and a medium of forgetting. Drawing on the concept of ‘télégenie’ this article analyzes how Godard attempts to overcome the gap between cinema and television.
