Abstract
As the digital game industry expands, players are showing increasing interest not only in game mechanics but also in the narrative structure and worldbuilding of games. This shift highlights the growing importance of story-centered design strategies in contemporary game design. Among the evolving narrative trends, Souls-like games have garnered attention for their use of ‘fragmented storytelling’-a method that distributes narrative fragments across gameplay elements such as dialogue, item descriptions, and environmental cues. FromSoftware’s Elden Ring exemplifies this approach by encouraging players to actively collect and interpret scattered narrative fragments in order to reconstruct the story and explore its world. This structure marks a clear departure from linear storytelling and instead invites interpretive participation, positioning the player as a narrative co-creator. This paper focuses on Elden Ring as a case study to analyze how fragmented storytelling is structured within Souls-like games, how this structure fosters interpretive engagement and player interaction, and how it serves as a philosophical mechanism that reflects themes of existentialism and absurdism. The study aims to identify how this mode of storytelling differs from conventional narrative strategies and proposes fragmented narrative as a critical design methodology in game studies.
