시간 서사는 영화 제작의 핵심 수단으로서 현대 영화 미학에서 점점 더 중 요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 크리스토퍼 놀란(Christopher Nolan)은 독특한 시 간 서사 스타일로 영화계에서 명성을 얻었으며, 그의 작품에서 시간과 서사의 복잡한 관계를 끊임없이 탐구하고 있다. 본 논문은 놀란의 <오펜하이머 (Oppenheimer)>(2023)를 연구 대상으로 삼아 그의 시간 서사 전략을 심도 있게 분석한다. 연구 결과, 놀란은 ‘핵분열(Fission)’과 ‘핵융합(Fusion)’ 두 개의 장을 통해 세 개의 교차하는 시간선을 구축하여 오펜하이머의 생애 경험, 보안 청문회, 스트 라우스 지명 청문회를 교묘하게 엮어냄으로써 전통적인 전기 영화의 선형적 서사 모델을 뒤집었다. 놀란은 주관화된 심리적 시간을 활용하여 인물의 내면 세계를 묘사하고, 플래시백, 의식의 흐름 등의 기법을 통해 오펜하이머의 복잡 한 심리 상태와 정신적 곤경을 깊이 있게 보여준다. 이러한 독특한 시간 서사 는 이야기의 극적 효과를 높일 뿐만 아니라 과학기술 윤리, 인간성의 모순 등 의 주제에 대한 탐구를 심화했다. <오펜하이머>는 놀란의 일관된 시간 서사 미학을 계승하고 발전시켜 전통적 인 전기 영화의 한계를 뛰어넘어 인간성과 역사를 깊이 있게 탐구하는 현대적 서사시가 되었다. 영화는 혁신적인 시간 처리를 통해 입체적인 인물 형상을 만 들어내고, 관객들로 하여금 역사, 과학기술, 인간성에 대해 깊이 있게 생각하게 만들며, 영화 서사 연구에 새로운 패러다임을 제시했다.
Abstract
Time narrative, as a key technique in filmmaking, has been playing an increasingly important role in contemporary film aesthetics. Christopher Nolan is renowned for his unique style of time narrative, constantly exploring the complex relationship between time and narrative in his works. This paper takes Nolan’s latest film Oppenheimer as the research object to analyze his time narrative strategies in depth. The study finds that Nolan constructs three intertwining timelines through the ‘Fission’ and ‘Fusion’ chapters, skillfully weaving together Oppenheimer’s life experiences, the security hearing, and the Strauss nomination hearing, subverting the linear narrative mode of traditional biographical films. Nolan employs subjective psychological time to portray the inner world of characters, using techniques such as flashbacks and stream of consciousness to deeply reveal Oppenheimer’s complex psychological state and spiritual dilemma. This unique time narrative not only enhances the drama of the story but also deepens the exploration of themes such as scientific ethics and human contradictions. Oppenheimer continues and develops Nolan’s consistent time narrative aesthetics, breaking the limitations of traditional biopics to become a modern epic that profoundly explores humanity and history. Through innovative time treatment, the film creates multi-dimensional character portrayals, prompting audiences to deeply reflect on history, technology, and human nature, providing a new paradigm for film narrative research.
